History in the Making.... by Susan Eskdale Alberta's provincial Conservative leader, Mr. Ralph Klein, has secured his third term as the Premier of the province. The often controversial leader has created history that others will soon study as an example of successful leadership.

Albertans went to the poles on Monday in what turned out to be an overwhelming support for the Klein government. Klein made history by being the first leader in Canada to develop an economic plan to reduce the debt and made it part of Alberta law that the government would have to allocate a certain amount of money towards this task. While at first his decisions were controversial, and are not without issue now, Alberta is just 18 months away from eliminating the debt. Not just the interest payments, but also the actual debt. Albertans will enjoy a mortgage free status, which promises to further increase the business opportunities and the wealth of Alberta. Klein has received attacks regarding his extreme cuts to medical and educational funding, but Mr. Klein is keeping his promise of redirecting funds into these areas, now that our debt load is not so staggering. This is a government that won with a landslide majority by keeping promises. Overall, Albertans realise that Klein’s provincial conservative party has kept the promises it made, including the last promise to go to the polls in 4 years to make sure they still had the public’s support. Albertans are ready to stick with the plan despite bumps in the road. Klein’s third consecutive term in provincial office will cause further evaluation of his tactics by other countries’ political analysts and leaders to see if they can take a page from Ralph Klein’s controversial yet endorsed leadership. |
